Final Presentation Slides:
In the spring of 2011, the second year communication design students at Emily Carr University of Art + Design were presented with an Identity Branding Project. In groups of four, they had to research the cultural history of a specific area in Vancouver and design an identity for that part of town. Our group chose Old Japantown, a four-block span in the downtown eastside. This blog tracks the design process of Craig Fleisch, Lindsey Kenler, Hanna Stefan, and Yannick Ploeger.

Logo Design - Ernesto Lago
Logo Inspiration from Lindsey:
http://blog.ernestolago.com/post/2652219876/50-sig ns
It's this guy who highlighted different parts of Baltimore with this little book that showcases it's 50 "best" signs.
I'm not sure if you've already come up with an ideas that we're using, but I think something like this could qualify as incorporating both logo and installation qualities.
We've been doing lots of historical research, and I think this could be an effective way of showcasing it, while still keeping it contemporary. I like that the Ernesto blog focuses on a small detail like signs... I wonder if we could find something that goes unnoticed in Japantown and share it in a book or brochure, or even those city cards (hanna didn't you mention them?)

Themes
HERE ARE THE 10 THEMES OUTLINED BY THE REPORT:
1. FIRST NATION'S PRESENCE
2. HEART OF THE CITY
3. HASTING'S MILL & WATERFRONT INDUSTRY
4. WELCOMING COMMUNITY
5. CYCLES OF PROSPERITY AND LOSS
6. EXCLUSION, PERSEVERANCE & RESISTANCE
7. CHURCH & CULTURAL PRECINCTS
8. HOUSING & HOME
9. JAPANESE-CANADIAN SETTLEMENT
10. GATHERING AT OPPENHEIMER PARK
I find #2, #4 and #5 particularly interesting.
Maybe we can have a few major themes based on the "spirit" of the place, and then some sub-themes, like ethnicity, and historically/culturally important landmarks...?
